Phil Mickelson voluntarily checked himself into an addiction treatment center to seek treatment for family trauma and addiction, according to his representative. The six-time major winner has already left the facility.
Mickelson's decision comes after months away from competitive golf. He withdrew from the Masters Tournament in April, citing a family-related personal health matter, and subsequently missed the PGA Championship and Open Championship. His last tournament appearance was at LIV Golf's South Africa event in March.
The golfer has previously been open about his struggle with gambling addiction. In 2023, he acknowledged crossing from moderation into addiction after being accused of betting $1 billion over three decades, and said he had sought professional help for years. Earlier this year, he was told to vacate The Farms Golf Club near San Diego following accusations of inappropriate contact with a female employee, which his legal team disputed.
In June, Mickelson's representative stated his priority was becoming "the husband, father, and man his family deserves," focusing on private family health matters. His attorney, Tom Clare, emphasized that Mickelson's story and recovery belong to him and those closest to him. There is no indication from the sources about when or whether he will return to professional competition.
