Rockstar's version of Miami will be battered by hurricanes and tropical storms that transform the environment with stunning visual detail. According to Owen Shepherd, vice president of art for lighting and rendering at Rockstar Games, these storms bring "heavy clouds, strong winds, dense atmospherics, and a lot of rain" so that "everything is dripping wet, water is gushing off roof edges and lampposts, thunder rumbles, and flashes of lightning light up the clouds dramatically."
The weather system matters because it reflects Rockstar's push to make GTA 6 feel like a living, breathing world. The company has redesigned its entire weather engine to be more localized and persistent, altering how players interact with the map during different conditions.
Beyond the major storms, Rockstar engineered subtle atmospheric effects throughout the game. "Offshore breezes after sunset, convectional updrafts, and occlusion from buildings" will create realistic wind patterns, Shepherd explained. "Hair and debris will swirl around on rooftops; gusts of wind will blow ripples over the water surface and bend the grass in swamps." The dynamic cloudscapes shift from clear Miami winter skies to the towering cumulonimbus clouds of Floridian summer afternoons. Rockstar also populated its Florida with over 170 animal species that players can encounter. The company has not yet detailed how hurricanes and tropical storms will mechanically impact gameplay, though the system is described as persistent and designed to alter the environment significantly.
