A total of 169,000 grant recipients ignored notices to appear for eligibility reviews, resulting in their accounts being marked for potential fraud investigations. This massive audit is part of a wider effort by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) to verify the status of 352,000 beneficiaries throughout the 2026/27 financial year.
These reviews serve as a critical gatekeeper for public funds, ensuring that assistance reaches only those currently entitled to it. For many recipients, failing to update contact details or neglecting the 90-day review window risks an immediate loss of financial support. While the agency aims to prevent waste, the scale of the flagged cases underscores the difficulty in maintaining accurate beneficiary records across the country.
Minister of Social Development Dina Pule stated that these investigations address instances where eligibility has changed, cases of payments continuing after a beneficiary’s death, and accounts linked to untraceable individuals. In the first quarter alone, SASSA reviewed 105,600 files. Of those, 56,807 grants were initially suspended due to non-compliance, though 5,231 of those cases were later reinstated once the recipients complied with the verification requirements.
Risk-based data analysis continues for the remainder of the fiscal year, with specific targets set for each province. SASSA officials confirmed that while Child Support Grant reviews were prioritized in the first batch, further assessments regarding Disability and Older Persons Grants are currently being determined.
