Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has called on residents to use the 2027 general elections to vote for leaders capable of sustaining and expanding infrastructure development in Abuja. Wike made the appeal in an Independence Day message marking Nigeria's 66th anniversary, urging voters to choose progressive and visionary leaders who will continue transforming the capital into a world-class city.
The push reflects the administration's focus on infrastructure as central to the capital's future. Wike said the FCT Administration had invested heavily in critical infrastructure, including road construction, drainage systems and solar streetlights, extending development beyond the city centre to remote rural communities. According to him, these projects aim to improve accessibility and address security challenges in communities located far from the city centre.
Wike also emphasized Abuja's symbolic importance to Nigeria. He described the capital as a reflection of national unity, where people from different ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds live and work together. The minister said the FCT, as the nation's capital, has a responsibility to promote inclusive development and reflect the ideals of a united Nigeria.
The administration's development agenda extends beyond central Abuja to satellite towns and rural areas, with Wike stressing that residents across the territory should benefit from government projects and services. He said the FCT remains committed to creating a modern, inclusive and functional capital that serves all residents.
