If someone had told Aryna Sabalenka after Wimbledon that she would reach the final of the US Open, she would not have believed it. After struggling physically and mentally, she describes reaching the New York final as a moment where she felt healthier and stronger again. This resurgence marks a significant turnaround for the athlete, who had previously faced a disappointing grass court season and challenges during the North American hard court swing.
Returning to competition at the China Open is a critical step for Sabalenka as she aims to reclaim the world number one ranking. Although she did not secure a Grand Slam title this season, her ability to rebuild her mindset and physical form provides a new momentum for the final three tournaments of the year. This transition from a difficult mid-season slump back to competitive form is the focus of her preparation for the remainder of the calendar.
Reporting from Beijing, the WTA notes this marks Sabalenka's fifth appearance at the tournament. According to Yahoo Sports, she has never previously surpassed the quarter-finals at this venue. While she recently ceded the top ranking to Elena Rybakina following the final in New York, the player maintains that she is proud of the work completed since the clay court season to stabilize her performance.
Sabalenka is now set to navigate the China Open, looking to convert her refreshed physical state into better results on the court. Her participation in these final events serves as the bridge toward her goal of regaining her standing before the end of the tour.
