Barkov went down awkwardly in the right corner during a power play at 8:07 of the second period against the Sharks at SAP Center. He immediately got up, asked for the Zamboni doors to be opened, and threw his gloves down while walking to the dressing room. The 31-year-old forward appeared to get tripped up during a scrum with Sharks defender Darnell Nurse and forward Zack Ostapchuk along the boards, with his left knee buckling during the play.
The injury is particularly concerning given Barkov's recent medical history. He missed all of the 2025-26 season after tearing his ACL and MCL in his right knee on the first day of training camp, undergoing surgery the following day. Despite the layoff, he led Finland to gold at the 2026 IIHF World Championship in Switzerland in May, serving as captain with 11 points in 10 games.
Barkov had expressed confidence about his recovery before this season. "I have a better feeling going toward this camp knowing that I played some hockey, meaningful hockey, and felt good there," he said in September. He played 20:32 in Tuesday's season opener, a 1-0 overtime win against the Carolina Hurricanes. He captained the Panthers to back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships in 2024 and 2025 and carries 782 points in 806 regular-season games since being drafted second overall in 2013.
