Mexico and United States clash at State Farm Stadium for 80th meeting

The long-standing rivalry enters its 80th chapter with Mexico holding a historical advantage over the United States with 38 wins to 24, alongside 17 draws. Mexico enters the match following a 2025 Gold Cup final victory against the USMNT, where they secured a 2-1 result to claim the title. This upcoming friendly continues a unique international window that combines the September and October breaks into one continuous period, offering clubs extra time while providing teams a platform to face regional rivals. State Farm Stadium, a 63,400-seat retractable roof venue in Glendale, Arizona, serves as the host site for the fixture. The pitch features a Tifway 419 roll-out natural grass surface. This match marks a significant moment for Mexico under the leadership of Rafael Márquez, who was appointed manager in July. Márquez, a former Barcelona standout, previously served as an assistant to Javier Aguirre during the World Cup. While his experience in the technical area remains limited, he is tasked with spearheading a youth movement and has been active in scouting operations for the squad. For the United States, this contest serves as a critical test against a familiar opponent following a recent pair of friendlies against South American teams. FIFA currently ranks Mexico 10th internationally, following a World Cup campaign that included wins over South Africa, South Korea, and the Czech Republic. Both teams look to capitalize on this window to refine their tactics and personnel as they navigate the international calendar. Fans can expect a intense physical contest, as meetings between these two sides frequently produce high-stakes moments regardless of the competitive nature of the friendly.
