At 2am on Sunday, clocks across New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, and the Australian Capital Territory will skip forward to 3am. This shift marks the official start of daylight saving time across much of the eastern seaboard and South Australia, while Queensland, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory continue to observe standard time.

For workers, the transition presents specific scheduling challenges. The Fair Work Ombudsman advises that most employees are paid "by the clock," meaning an eight-hour shift during the night of the change may result in working only seven hours while receiving eight hours of pay. In border regions like Tweed Heads and Coolangatta, local businesses are bracing for potential confusion among clientele who may struggle with the time difference between neighbouring states, with some owners adjusting operating hours to accommodate the shift.

While the change offers an additional hour of afternoon sunlight, it effectively requires people to wake up an hour earlier. To help manage the adjustment, the New South Wales government recommends gradually shifting bedtimes by 15-minute increments in the days leading up to the change to help the body clock adapt. Research suggests that while some individuals may experience effects comparable to minor jet lag, there is no evidence of significant negative impacts on mental health.

The debate over the practice remains active, with Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate recently calling for the adoption of daylight saving in southeast Queensland. Despite such regional discourse, the seasonal schedule change remains a fixture for millions of Australians until the clocks revert in April.
