More than 80 local merchants are stepping out from their shophouses and onto the pavement as the Joo Chiat Street Social transforms the neighborhood into a pedestrian-only zone. While the official event activities run from 3.30pm to 9.30pm, the thoroughfare will remain closed to all traffic from 8 am on Saturday, October 3, until 2 am the following Sunday to facilitate setup and breakdown.
This street takeover serves as a local highlight of the Land Transport Authority's World Car-Free Day 2026 celebrations. By reclaiming the space usually reserved for vehicles, the Katong-Joo Chiat Business Association aims to promote a car-lite lifestyle through a mix of heritage experiences, fitness sessions, and community engagement. This marks the first time precinct merchants have united under a single, synchronized program to activate the road.
According to Little Day Out, the festival features three themed zones along the stretch of Joo Chiat Road between Dunman Road and East Coast Road. The Music Zone will host live performances from artists including Glen Wee and The Monty Crew. Visitors can also expect hawker food and specific drink redemptions provided by the Weekend Brew Club.
This event is part of a broader series of celebrations across Singapore that run through November 30, 2026. The initiative encourages residents to utilize public transport, walking, or cycling as alternatives to car travel, mirroring the global movement that originated in Europe during the late 1990s.
