Dane Gagai has secured permission to switch his international eligibility from Australia to New Zealand, positioning the veteran for a potential showdown against Latrell Mitchell. The 35-year-old, who has not represented Australia since 2018, received approval following a successful appeal to the International Rugby League (IRL) Appeals Committee regarding his unique eligibility status.

This decision carries significant weight for the upcoming World Cup, as it paves the way for Gagai to join the Kiwis for their opening match at Allianz Stadium. The move ensures the veteran centre remains competitive at the international level, avoiding the disadvantage he faced due to recent shifts in player eligibility rules. Gagai’s transition follows his long-standing commitment to his heritage, having played for the Māori All Stars since 2019, and his qualification for New Zealand through his mother, Tania.

IRL Chair Troy Grant confirmed that “special circumstances” supported the decision, noting that both ARLC Executive Chairman Peter V’landys and Kangaroos coach Kevin Walters backed the application. The committee acknowledged that Gagai had been excluded from opportunities afforded to other players, such as Kalyn Ponga and AJ Brimson, who were permitted to represent different nations despite previous Australian ties. The ruling rectifies this disparity, allowing Gagai to shift allegiances after his initial request was previously rejected.

Currently, Gagai is preparing for the NRL premiership decider, aiming for a grand final victory with the Knights against the Sydney Roosters. Following the conclusion of the NRL season, he is expected to transition into the Kiwis camp to prepare for the tournament opener.
