With 99% of votes counted in Brazil's presidential race, right-wing challenger Flávio Bolsonaro emerged in the lead with 47.03% against incumbent President Lula da Silva's 45.16%. As Brazilian electoral law requires a candidate to exceed 50% of the vote to win outright, the result guarantees a decisive second round between the two candidates. Bolsonaro, the 45-year-old son of jailed former president Jair Bolsonaro, performed stronger than initial polling suggested, positioning himself as the frontrunner for the next stage of the contest.

The outcome of this election holds significant weight for Latin America's largest economy, which remains deeply polarized. The campaign has centered on critical issues including crime, corruption, national sovereignty, and the state of the economy. For the 80-year-old incumbent Lula, a victory would secure a fourth term for the veteran politician. Conversely, a win for Bolsonaro would align Brazil with a broader conservative shift seen across the region and among allies of the Trump administration, potentially impacting future international relations and trade security.

According to the BBC, Bolsonaro's Liberal Party also achieved notable success in legislative results, securing the majority of seats for governors, senators, and federal deputies, which promises the party considerable influence in Congress. The Guardian reports that voters are now turning their attention to the next phase of the campaign, as no other candidate reached a significant percentage of the vote in the first round. Both major candidates largely avoided traditional TV debates during the primary phase, leaving the electorate to weigh the polarized platforms of the two leading figures.

The final determination of the nation's leadership will take place on 25 October, when voters head back to the polls for the run-off election. This second vote will finalize whether the incumbent retains his seat or if the right-wing opposition successfully takes control of the presidency.
