The Kenya Meteorological Service Authority confirms that the country has formally entered the October-December rainfall season. While rains have already commenced in 24 counties—including the Coast, western Kenya, and the Rift Valley—the weather pattern is continuing to spread rapidly to the remaining regions. Meteorological officials are urging farmers to consult specific county-level forecasts, as the intensity and timing of the onset will vary significantly by location.
This shift to wetter-than-normal conditions is critical for agricultural planning. With different regions experiencing distinct weather windows, rely on the detailed weekly and monthly forecasts available through local directors of Meteorological Services to manage crops effectively as the season progresses. Proper monitoring is essential as the country transitions from dry intervals to the forecasted rain.
Acting head of the Kenya Meteorological Service Authority, Edward Muriuki, noted that while rains have started in areas such as Nakuru, Kisumu, and Mombasa, the final counties of Turkana and Samburu are expected to see the onset of the season in the third or fourth week of October. Central Kenya, including Nairobi, Kiambu, and Nyeri, is slated to receive rainfall starting next week or the following week. Between October 4 and October 8, the service predicts light to moderate showers accompanied by potential thunderstorms and lightning across multiple regions.
The meteorological department expects the current weather patterns to evolve as the season matures. Residents in the far north, specifically Wajir and Mandera, are already tracking moderate showers and thunderstorms, with temperatures in those regions reaching up to 36°C according to recent reports.
