Seven workers died in workplace incidents throughout September, prompting the Ministry of Manpower to demand immediate action. Among the recent casualties, a 22-year-old worker fell from the 12th storey of a construction site, while two others drowned after their work platform dislodged at Tuas Port. Another fatal accident involved a 35-year-old struck by a pressurized hose at a construction site. These tragedies serve as a grim reminder that safety protocols must not be neglected.

For businesses in the construction, transportation, and storage sectors, these changes directly impact operational freedom and financial liability. Companies are urged to review all health procedures, specifically targeting the use of concrete pumps and vehicle safety mechanisms like wheel chocks and handbrakes. Failure to comply with evolving standards now carries more severe consequences, potentially halting work for months or cutting off access to the migrant-worker labor pool.

According to the Ministry of Manpower, firms are encouraged to conduct a voluntary safety time-out from Oct 5 to Oct 18. Simultaneously, the government is rolling out an enforcement operation running from Oct 5 to Nov 4. First-time composition fines will jump from S$2,000 to S$3,000, and minimum stop-work orders are expanding from five weeks to eight weeks. In the most serious cases, companies may face a three-month ban on hiring new migrant workers.

Minister of State for Manpower Dinesh Vasu Dash stated that the government must act decisively to stop the loss of lives. These measures mirror a previous intervention implemented nationwide between June 26 and July 31 following a similar spate of fatalities earlier in the year.
