Passengers on United Airlines Flight 884 sat on the tarmac for nearly 12 hours before their journey from Washington Dulles International Airport to Rome was officially scrapped. The ordeal began on October 2 when technical cockpit issues, severe weather, and a faulty door seal left travelers grounded at the gate and on the runway throughout the night. One passenger, Rebecca Bliden, described the grueling experience of sitting in the plane while listening to children crying as temperatures rose inside the cabin.
The situation spiraled as the aircraft repeatedly returned to the gate for refueling and maintenance inspections. After the original flight crew reached their legal duty-time limits, a new crew was brought in to assist. However, further technical complications, including a broken tug vehicle that struck the plane, forced passengers to deplane multiple times. United Airlines stated that the flight was ultimately canceled at approximately 4 a.m. due to the cascading crew time limitations and unresolved mechanical concerns.
For the travelers involved, the travel nightmare meant missing initial plans, including a 50th birthday celebration in Italy. According to Bliden, the airline provided passengers with $175 in compensation for the disruption. Many of the affected individuals were eventually rebooked on an extra flight that did not depart until the evening of October 4. The recurring issues—ranging from food spoilage that required a new catering truck to the reported mechanical failure of a door seal—left passengers exhausted before they even left the ground.
