Airport staff were caught on camera loading 23 bags containing 500 packages of methamphetamine onto a chartered aircraft just two hours after it arrived in Laos on Oct 1. The operation, which took place at Luang Prabang International Airport, resulted in the immediate detention of 13 people, including a Singaporean pilot, a Malaysian co-pilot, a Filipino passenger, and 10 Laotian airport workers. Among the local staff held are three ground-handling employees and seven X-ray machine operators.
This seizure highlights the aggressive efforts of drug syndicates to move illicit goods across Southeast Asia, with investigations confirming the shipment was intended for the Manila market in the Philippines. The Royal Malaysia Police has since launched a comprehensive investigation to determine if the syndicate has deeper links within Malaysia, announcing plans to send officers to Laos to interview those in custody.
The intercepted aircraft had originally departed from Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang without cargo. According to the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department of Malaysia, the drugs were loaded into the aircraft while it was on the ground in Laos. Following the initial bust, a second, separate operation at Subang Airport resulted in four more individuals being taken into custody. These suspects were detained while preparing to fly to Manila in a jet configured for medical evacuation, which reportedly belongs to the same company involved in the Oct 1 incident.
Malaysian authorities are now coordinating with international counterparts to unravel the full extent of the operation. Officials are expected to travel to Laos soon to record formal statements from the 13 individuals already detained there as the cross-border probe continues.
