Odell Beckham Jr. joins the Minnesota roster after a difficult start to the 2024 season with the New York Giants. During his three-game stint in New York, the veteran receiver failed to secure a single catch, recording zero receptions on one target across 20 snaps before being released following Week 3. Now 33 years old, Beckham attempts to revive his career with a team currently facing significant injuries in its receiving corps.
The addition provides a depth option for a Minnesota offense that has struggled to produce secondary targets. With Justin Jefferson sidelined by an ankle injury suffered in Week 3, the Vikings have leaned heavily on Jordan Addison, who has caught 11 passes for 163 yards and one touchdown. Beyond Addison, other receivers on the roster have struggled to contribute, with no other wide receiver managing more than two catches this season. Coach Kevin O’Connell’s familiarity with Beckham—dating back to their time together when O'Connell was the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams in 2021—serves as the foundation for this latest roster move.
According to official team announcements reported by NFL.com and NBC Sports, Minnesota also signed wideout Jeshaun Jones to the practice squad this Wednesday. The team additionally saw center Michael Jurgens and tight end Ben Yurosek return to practice from injured reserve. While Beckham proved instrumental in the Rams' Super Bowl LVI victory during his 2021 stint under O’Connell, where he tallied seven total touchdowns including the postseason, his current role remains limited to the practice squad as the Vikings assess his remaining capabilities on the field.
