In his new memoir, One Helluva Ride, actor Michael Douglas recalls navigating a long-distance relationship with Catherine Zeta-Jones during the late 1990s while facing an unexpected competitor for her time. Douglas recounts that the future NBA icon Kobe Bryant, who lived in a house directly above hers in the Pacific Palisades, repeatedly visited the actress under the guise of searching for his wandering dog. Douglas jokes, I'm not sure how many times he 'lost his dog,' but it was a lot.
This revelation offers a unique glimpse into the lives of two future stars before their careers reached global fame. At the time, Bryant was a rising talent with the Los Angeles Lakers who had not yet met his wife, Vanessa Laine, while Zeta-Jones was building her Hollywood reputation with major film roles. The proximity allowed Zeta-Jones to observe Bryant practicing on his private basketball court, witnessing the early dedication that would eventually define his legendary career.
Douglas and Zeta-Jones, who met in France in 1998, maintained their bond through frequent phone calls while managing their respective careers between New York and Los Angeles. Despite the proximity to the Lakers star, the couple’s relationship continued to grow. They announced their engagement on New Year's Eve in 1999, just five months before Bryant proposed to Laine in May 2000. Zeta-Jones later honored her former neighbor following the 2020 helicopter crash, noting that their connection began years earlier when they were both young and ambitious.
