“In other clubs he would not be in this process,” said Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso regarding the return of winger Monnapule Saleng. The player was previously forced to train away from the main group following disciplinary issues, including failing to show up for travel ahead of a CAF Champions League match in Morocco against AS FAR.
This decision marks a critical turning point for the former Orlando Pirates star, as he looks to regain his standing at the club. The reintegration is significant for the team's depth, as management looks to balance disciplinary standards with the need for high-level performance across a crowded attacking roster. The club's leadership, including the chairman, sporting director, captains, and playing staff, collectively agreed to provide the attacker with a second opportunity.
According to Miguel Cardoso, as reported by Goal.com and Soccer Laduma, the winger met every internal benchmark for professionalism during his exile. He demonstrated consistency while training in solitude and has maintained that path since rejoining the group. Despite this progress, Cardoso emphasized that returning to training does not guarantee immediate selection.
With competition in the attacking department currently at an all-time high, even decorated squad members are struggling to secure spots on the bench. Cardoso noted that the team possesses more options in the forward line than in previous seasons, creating constant selection headaches. While the coach remains committed to mending the professional relationship with the winger, he stated that the specific timing of the player's return to competitive matches remains undecided.
