Joe Milton joins the Eagles as backup depth after Jalen Hurts was diagnosed with a superficial blood clot, originally detected via ultrasound following the team's Saturday walkthrough before their game in London against the Jacksonville Jaguars. A follow-up ultrasound on Wednesday revealed movement in the small clot, leading the team to rule Hurts out for Week 6 against Carolina and determine the appropriate course of treatment.
With Hurts sidelined indefinitely, the Eagles need additional quarterback depth beyond Tanner McKee, who is expected to start Sunday against the Panthers. Milton spent the first five weeks of the season on Dallas' practice squad after being waived from the Cowboys' initial 53-man roster despite being drafted in the sixth round in 2024 by New England and traded to Dallas last year.
In his NFL career, Milton has appeared in five contests without starting a game. He completed 37-of-53 passes for 424 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, while also rushing for 66 yards and a touchdown. Last season with Dallas, he went 15-of-24 for 183 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions across four games.
The Eagles, who have lost three straight games following a 2-0 start and fallen under .500 for the first time since 2021, will face the Panthers on Sunday. Cole Payton, a fifth-round pick in the 2026 draft from North Dakota State, remains the only other quarterback on the roster besides McKee.
