Emergency services responded to a vehicle crash on Murphy Street in Wangaratta before 4pm, injuring independent MP Helen Haines near her electorate office. The street was closed in both directions as police responded to the incident.
Haines has represented the Victorian regional electorate of Indi as a federal MP since 2019, when she became the first independent to succeed another MP, taking the seat from Cathy McGowan. The 65-year-old former nurse, midwife and health researcher has been an advocate for better telecommunications infrastructure and the establishment of the National Anti-Corruption Commission.
In a statement, Haines's family said she was receiving medical care and thanked bystanders and health workers who assisted her, as well as police for their response. The family asked that their privacy be respected by the public and media during this time.
