Storm season
2026/2027

The first named storm of the 2026/2027 season, Storm Austen was named in honor of Austen H. Nagle, the first director of the Irish Meteorological Service appointed in 1936. While the storm center tracks to the south of Ireland toward southern England, its influence is expected to bring heavy rain across the entire nation starting Thursday night. The system is deepening as it moves from the Atlantic Ocean, fueled by a strong jet stream.

For those across Ireland, the weather system presents a direct risk of localized flooding and hazardous travel conditions throughout Thursday night and Friday morning. Met Éireann has explicitly warned that outdoor events may face significant disruption due to the heavy rainfall. Authorities suggest that while the southern regions are currently expected to see the most severe impacts, the rapidly evolving nature of the storm means that warnings could be upgraded as the pressure system moves closer to the country.

According to Met Éireann, a nationwide Status Yellow rain warning begins at 7pm on Thursday and expires at 8am on Friday. A separate, localized warning for Dublin and Wicklow remains in effect from 1am to 8am on Wednesday. Meteorologists advise that while the worst of the rain is expected to clear by Friday morning, blustery showers will persist for the remainder of the day.

The unsettled weather is set to continue through the upcoming long weekend and Bank Holiday Monday. Residents should monitor for potential warning updates, as small changes in the storm's track could significantly shift the areas most affected by heavy precipitation and strong winds.
